Dental Sealants

Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If your child has deep grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of their molars (back teeth), their dentist may recommend dental sealants.

Sealants are made of plastic resins that bond and harden on the tooth’s surface. When a tooth is sealed, the tiny grooves become smooth and are less likely to harbor plaque. With dental sealants, brushing your teeth or your child’s teeth becomes easier and more effective.

Benefits of Dental Sealants

Dental sealants prevent childhood cavities by sealing the chewing surfaces of molars. However, dental sealants for adults are also a possibility if you are at high risk for tooth decay. Your dentist will be able to go over the pros and cons of dental sealants so you can make an informed decision for your oral health.

The typical tooth sealant lasts 3 to 5 years. However, it’s not uncommon to see adults with sealants still intact from childhood. A tooth sealant only provides protection when it’s fully intact. If your sealants come off, you’ll need to schedule an appointment with your dentist to have your teeth resealed.
